Yaffa Cafe was a 24-hour East Village staple. My moms, now married for over 20 years, had their first date there at a time when you had to be careful who you were gay around. Yaffa Cafe was the epitome of welcoming for all, and the art scene thrived within its walls. Unfortunately, on October 4, 2014, after 34 years, it was shut down by the city. I never got the pleasure of visiting myself, but I imagine the restaurant as a place of love and acceptance.
